In Los Altos, the number of ADUs allowed on a multifamily property depends on the type of ADU and how many existing dwelling units are already on the property:

Conversion ADUs:

  • Maximum: ADU: Maximum 850 sq. ft. for one bedroom, 1,200 sq. ft. for two bedrooms.
  • Minimum: Up to 50% of the primary dwelling's floor area (attached only).

Detached ADUs

  • Maximum: 1 detached ADU are permitted per lot.
